FCA Achieves ROI on Industry 4.0 Initiative: ZERO Physical Piloting of Assembly

Challenge

Up until recently, all new products launched by the Brazilian unit of FCA were done using onscreen reviews of the CAD Design Data for the new product and proposed manufacturing environments, but some assembly issues did not become evident untill physically piloting the tooling with pre-production prototype parts. As part of their MFG2020 initiatives and FCA digital transformation efforts, the practice of waiting until physical build to finalize manufacturing engineering was no longer an option. FCA opted to use Virtual Build engineering validation with IC.IDO to fill the gap left by the removal of physical mock-ups in their process.

Benefits

FCA Latin America was able to analyze several assemblies at different workstations on the production line and simulate the real conditions of the product and process, without building physical tooling or a vehicle. Ergonomics, visibility of hard-to-see locations, access of hard-to-reach places and validation of assembly devices, transfer systems and installation processes were all addressed.

“Due to ESI Group’s disruptive virtual reality solution, IC.IDO, it was an easy decision for us to implement their software. It met the growing need for increasingly assertive virtual simulations generated by industry 4.0.”

Eric Beremis Baier Laia, Virtual Reality Specialist of MFG2020 FCA LATAM
